Description
The first time I saw an Anhinga, it was "swimming" in the lake behind my house. Only his neck and head was visible and it looked like a menacing snake to me. Being new to Florida, I panicked and thought I was looking at a python or some other malicious snake only to watch him exit the lake with a fish in his beak. He then spread his wings to dry them and moved his head comically from left to right. Unlike ducks, anhingas or Indian Snake Birds have no oil on their wings and therefore must dry them in the sun before flying. He has now become one of my favorite lake residents.
