The recent killings of Breonna Taylor, Ahmad Arberry and George Floyd left me devastated and depressed. With each murder I saw my son, daughter, husband, brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and myself. I could not paint for weeks for fear of what I might unleash. I finally mustered the courage to paint what I felt. To my surprise, I ended up with deep despair rather than anger. This piece highlights mother Africa weeping as she sees her children kidnapped and later murdered, their faces and names represented in the stripes on the flag as brother Colin attempts to draw attention to our plight.
I don't paint anything I have to explain.
