Description
The desire for freedom burned in the heart of slaves, yet the end of slavery did not bring the end of suffering. African-Americans were never compensated for their slave labor and were not given land or money on which to start a new life. Penniless and uneducated, many ex-slaves had no choice but to return to the plantations which enslaved them to an equally difficult life of sharecropping. This woman shows the uncertainty that many ex-slaves must have felt when facing freedom.
