Artist's Description

These homes are still being built and maintained throughout the west using the same techniques passed on for hundreds of years. They are artistically beautiful and engineering genius. The front rooms are used as living quarters while the back rooms are for grain storage. Many villages have pits or kivas that are used for religious purposes. Originally windows were made from sheets of clear mica, but modern pueblos use window glass. Because the pueblo tribes of Acoma, Taos, Hopi and Zuni were never forced to leave their homelands, it was easier to pass their traditions to the next generations. Pueblo villages still can be seen in southern Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico.
