Description
During the beginning of the impressionist movement in France, the annual Salon was the only way a living artist could display their work. Salon's jury rejected the work of Monet, Renoir. Degas, Marisot and Sisley (but accepted the work of Manet), so they pooled their money and opened their own exhibit from 1874-1886 called the Anonymous Society of Painters and Sculptors and Printmakers. Parisian art critics did not accept their work, saying it was unfinished and seemed to be only an impression of a finished piece, hence the name impressionism.
