Description
Richard Allen was a member of the Methodist church who was disturbed that the Black members of the congregation were segregated from the white members and had to sit in the gallery. They were not permitted to go to the alter with the white members nor make communion until all of the white members had done so. He was only permitted to preach to Black crowds and the size of the crowd was limited. Frustrated, he formed his own church called the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the first one being in Philadelphia. Almost simultaneously another congregation was forming in New York. To distinguish the two denominations, the New York church adopted the African Methodist Episcopal Zion nomenclature. I grew up in both churches, my mother being AME Zion and my father AME. Although neither denomination discriminates, the AME and AME Zion churches have been a cornerstone in the Black community since their founding, especially in the northeast US. This is a gouache study done for Black history month.
