There are 7 species of sea turtle, all of which have been on earth for between 110 million and 120 million years. The individual sea turtle can live for 70 to 80 years. Unlike land turtles, sea turtles cannot retract their head and legs into their shells which are designed for moving through water efficiently, which allows them to migrate over 12,000 miles. Depending on species, the sea turtle does not mature for 5 to 30 years and the female will return to her birthplace to lay her eggs. An interesting fact, the turtle's gender is determined by the nest temperature -- cooler temps will produce more males.
