As a child, we always got a live tree. Our tree of choice was the blue spruce. We would get a tree with roots intact and my parents would dig a hole in the front yard. During those times, it was popular to decorate the trees with foil tinsel that was impossible to remove, so our newly planted evergreens would often have this silver tinsel peeking out from under the snow. In the spring, it was not unusual to see bits of tinsel in the birds nests. I guess bling was part of a stylish bird's decor.
