Trayvon Martin was shot dead on my husband's birthday. He was someone's son, nephew, brother, neighbor, classmate. He was a child. His killer was acquitted, the jury saw his fear of this teenager as justified. I have a son, grandson, brother, nephews, cousins, friends who look like Trayvon. The child in this piece reminded me of how threatened our innocence is. I originally intended to add a hoodie to this image, but realized that no hoodie was needed to portray the innocence of a child and the devastation of the senseless killing out of unsubstantiated fear.
