Description
Phillis Wheatley was perhaps one of the most important figures in the history of enslaved Africans. Born in west Africa, she was captured and enslaved in 1761 at age 7 and purchased by a Boston couple who taught her to read and write. She began writing poetry in English at the age of 9 and wrote her first major work at age 17. Her first book was the second book published by and American woman and the first book published by an African-American woman. Her accomplishments flew in the face of the common belief that enslaved Africans were intellectually inferior, thus justifying their enslavement.
